Music Cafe • (Synthwave ish) Even After All This Time

This drifted to something way different than planned (not sure it even stayed synthwave). I think going forward I'm going to start forcing myself into a genre and sticking with it. Currently I do sound selection in advance (because it sucks to be in a creative place and trying to do it) then just play around for hours from there with zero intention.

My favorite is the ARPy lead. It's a Repro-5 preset from Pantheon pack. I'm not affiliated but it has some of the most beautiful sounds out of a VST synth I have heard. Here's the link:

The rest:
Bass - Diva
First lead - Tal Uno
I couldn't quite to get the detuned nature of the patch to sit right. I ended up creating two tracks with different detuning and alternating between which one sat better for each note to try and get it to sit better. Then I used sidechain to open up what it was clashing with until it got to the point it passed the 'listening while spaced out' test where I see if I can space out without the song drawing my attention with 'wrong sound'.

Second lead (third if you count the ARP lead) - Tal Pha

This was supposed to be an ARP but when I played it with the patch set to mono it go this interesting to me sound. Not really synthwave so I was torn but it fit right into the song so I used it.

Drums - EZDrummer Synthwave Pack
Lots of effects. Tape 99 on the master bus. I like what it does, but I feel like it narrows down my songs stereo field quite a bit and need to figure if I can open it back up after (though it's probably the tape cross talk emulation so maybe not).

Almost forgot the vocals. Getting the sound like I wanted distant and spacey but also present and understandable was tricky. I tried with bitcrushing/filters/resonance with Decimort but it just introduces too much negative stuff for vocals. I finally figured it out. The secret weapon? The free Soundly PlaceIt (I probably could have just used IRs but PlaceIt is super easy to dial in). It still needed a bunch of resonance suppression to sit right as well.
