It was never about the sound. It was about the performance features. It was Vangelis baby because of velocity sensitivity (very rare at the time), poly aftertouch (even more rare if not unheard of), foot pedals, the pitch ribbon... hands on control over the sound, perfect for performance-based composers like The Greek.Probably going to messa up some peoples' lives, and their kids', but in 2025, CS80 is pretty overrated. It can only be nostalgia, because it doesn't sound THAT good
there's a reason he absolutely drenched it in lexicon 224 reverb. the dry sound is, as you say, "not THAT good."
but this is widely known and understood, has been for years. getting the CS-80 "right" in a plugin is always a challenge because it was never about the 'sound' but rather about the features and how they translate to the computer plugin world.
that said, the sound of the ring modulator is very cool
