Oh hell yes.Do you think anyone would have seen that as "distortion""? I don't, they 'd have just heard a new, different sound.
There is this anecdote of a very famous guitar player (don't recall which and google won't tell me) around 1960 (+/- 5 years) that got into the studio for a recording session. The engineer (they probably still had white or beige lab coats on then) had miked up his amp and asked for sound check. And after the player touched the strings he said something like "You must turn that amp down, boy!! Not because it's too loud but because you're overdriving it. In my career I've never got distortion into my recordings, and it's bloody not happening today as well."
If you have nothing nice to say, then saying nothing is often a very good choice.I still don't see what ARA offers that I can't do without it.
