I was more commenting in terms of depth of the mix from front to back...Thank you Mark for the kind words and the hints. I have to admit that mixing and mastering is not really my strength and better monitors are out of my budget. So I still have to learn a lot.
What do you exactly mean by "a little tiny bit 'flat' with everything sort of in the middle distance as such". Are you talking about the overall mix being to much in the middle range or about depth mixing and stereo imaging of the tracks? By pushing forward and back, do you mean EQ or simply the tracks volume?
Various things can improve the depth (and it should always be done alongside tweaks to the L / R stereo aspects of the mix + the Bottom / Top 'height' of the mix as well to get it all as balanced as possible and to try and make some aspects 'pop'!
Elements that can effect the DEPTH specifically:
Volume - yes, straight forward.
Reverb - not all of them create depth in the same way...certain types...pre-delay on the chosen reverb is crucial.
EQ - also crucial in created a sense of depth as well.
Pan position - weirdly, also affects the sense of 'back to front' sense of depth as well.
Rather than me ramble on incoherently, here are some useful, well-written articles on the subject...each one covers the topic of MIX DEPTH in a slightly different way with a different angle / focus each time:
